Eyebrow embroidery is the art of creating semi-permanent makeup eyebrows, or cosmetic tattoo eyebrows using certain specialised techniques so they look as natural as possible.
The term eyebrow ‘embroidery’ is a new term that has recently become a bit of a buzz word, but truth of the matter is that the real experts in the field have been doing what is now called “embroidery” for a long time. The techniques employed to create this look are what we call ‘hair strokes’ often cross-hatched, combined with some varied tones of shading if required. When we use more of a cross-hatched hair stroke technique, the brows look less blocky and more natural.
Eyebrow embroidery is also used to distinguish between brows that are less ‘permanent’ (2-3 yrs) than the standard semi-permanent (5-8 yrs). Keep in mind that there are no truly permanent eyebrows. All tattoos fade with time and depending on your age and skin type the results can vary significantly.
I have also been providing my clients with what I call “Star Brows™” for some years now. It is similar to eyebrow embroidery but can be made to last even shorter periods of time, say 2-3 months, or 2-3 weeks even, for those wanting to test out looks or who simply don’t want to commit for years to the one shape. We use a manual pen technique that is pretty much pain free and quick. Our clients love what can be achieved with star brows and it is a great compliment to permanent eyeliner or lip liner.
For now, to understand eyebrow embroidery, all you need to know it is a less formulaic approach to tattooing brows and more of a natural mimicking of the way natural brows work, using hair strokes going in different directions, light and dark tones, combining colors and mixing textures. It is a very artistic approach which requires an artists eye for balance and knowledge. Ultimately all brows we design at The Art of Eyebrows are considered to be works of art, but embroidery is a particular look.
You might ask what the other options are. Well there as many different eyebrows as there are faces so we never take a blanket approach with any of our clients. We are always tailoring our procedures to align with our clients tastes, style and aesthetic preferences. For some, hair-strokes are not what they are after, as they prefer a more sleek, defined and simple look. For others, only require a small amount of shading is required to complement the brow hairs they already. Shading alone can often provide the perfect amount and style of enhancement.
There are also cases where just a few hairs are required to complete an already perfect shape. Perhaps a scar or two brows out of balance where the simple addition of a few hairs can correct the balance. This is a great time to employ hair strokes and embroidery techniques to create the illusion of hairs where they aren’t any.
Whether you choose to go with starbrows, semi-permanent makeup brows, or elements of eyebrow embroidery it is important to work with a qualified and talented eyebrow stylist and cosmetic tattoo technician. They will always be able to advice you as to the best procedure for you. Procedures can range from mildly uncomfortable to pain free depending on the technique and permanency desired. There is often but not always an amount of redness after your procedure which typically resolves after a few hours and with a small amount of foundation you can go straight back to life as normal.
At The Art of Eyebrows we always encourage our clients to have touch ups in order to create the best look for them over a few sessions so they are comfortable with the look we are achieving and have an opportunity to tweak the creative process as they get more comfortable with the look of their new brows. But often our busy executive clients or interstate, overseas travelers need their brows completed in one session, and with a little extra time, this is achievable too. We aim to please.
